Canoe Explorer FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions before you book.

What’s the difference between Canoe Explorer and Family Paddling?

Canoe Explorer is our longer 2-hour guided session, designed for adults, couples and families with older children. We typically travel further along the Beaulieu River and explore more of the nature reserve when conditions allow.

Family Paddling is shorter, more relaxed and better suited to younger children and first-time family sessions.

Do we need experience?

No previous experience is needed. It’s suitable for confident beginners, with your instructor on the water throughout. We tailor the pace to the group and help you build confidence as you go.

Canoe or kayak — which should we choose?

Canoes are stable and great for pairs, with a bit more room for bags (and calm dogs). Kayaks feel more individual and slightly sportier. If you’re unsure, we can advise on arrival and you can split your group between boat types.

Is this suitable for a 12–13 year old?

Yes. The minimum age is 12 and it’s ideal for teens who are comfortable around water. It’s a guided tidal river journey — not a wild white-water session — and we manage the pace and conditions carefully.

How far do we go?

We usually travel further than our Family Paddling session. The exact distance varies with tide and conditions, and your instructor plans the route, with time to explore creeks and open stretches of the river.

Is the Beaulieu River tidal? Is it safe?

Yes, it’s a tidal river. Sessions are planned around the tides and your instructor manages the direction and distance. It’s a brilliant, beginner-friendly place to paddle with expert supervision.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We run in the rain and typical British weather. We only cancel if conditions are unsafe. If that happens, we’ll be in touch to offer rescheduling or credit options — we always put safety first.

What should we wear and bring?

Wear old trainers or water shoes and comfortable outdoor clothing. Bring a waterproof layer, plus a towel and a full change of clothes. On warm days, sun cream is a good idea too.

Where do we meet and is there parking?

We’re based in Beaulieu in the New Forest, with parking, toilets and changing rooms on site. Full joining instructions are sent in your confirmation email.

Can we cancel or move our booking?

If you need to make changes, contact us as early as possible. Our booking terms are shown clearly at checkout and we always aim to be helpful where we can, especially if weather is a factor.

Are dogs welcome?

Yes — dogs are welcome as long as they’re calm around water and people, and you choose to go in a canoe.

Is Canoe Explorer suitable for couples?

Definitely. It’s a popular choice for couples looking for something active but relaxed, and a great way to experience the Beaulieu River Nature Reserve together.

Book with confidence.

As one of the top things to do in The New Forest, we’re confident that what we do is excellent and provides real value for money.

However, if for any reason we let you down, you’ll be eligible for our 100% satisfaction guarantee and we’ll refund you your money, no questions asked.
