A Flexible Woodland Experience Built Around Your Family

Bushcraft is a huge subject, covering everything from fire, shelter and water skills to tool use, natural crafts, wildlife identification and outdoor problem solving. Because of this, no two Family Bushcraft Sessions are exactly the same.

Each 3-hour session is carefully shaped around the weather, season, group size, age range and experience level. This keeps the experience safe, engaging and genuinely suited to the people taking part.

The result is a relaxed but memorable family adventure where adults and children can learn together, build confidence and enjoy meaningful time outdoors.

What Can Be Included in Your Bushcraft Session?

Every session is different. Activities are selected to suit the conditions, the group and the time of year.

Fire lighting during a family bushcraft session

Fire Lighting

Learn how fires are prepared, managed and lit safely using practical bushcraft methods. Depending on conditions, this may include sparks, tinder, fire lays and safe fire control.

Shelter Building

Work together to create simple woodland shelters using tarps, ropes, natural materials and teamwork-based problem solving.

Woodland water skills and bushcraft learning

Natural Crafts

Use natural materials to create simple woodland crafts, useful items or seasonal projects inspired by the forest around you.

Nature identification activity in the New Forest

Identification Skills

Learn how to notice and identify useful natural signs, plants, trees, tracks, materials and seasonal changes in the woodland environment.

Flexible family bushcraft session in the New Forest

Designed Around Weather, Group & Season

Bushcraft works best when it responds to the natural environment. A wet winter session may focus more on shelter, fire preparation and resilience, while a dry summer session may allow more time for crafts, navigation-style games, identification and woodland skills.

Your instructor will choose activities that are safe, achievable and enjoyable for the group on the day.

This flexible approach means your family gets a session that feels personal, practical and connected to the woodland around you.

Family Bushcraft Session FAQs

Useful information before booking your session.

What age is this suitable for?

Standard family bushcraft sessions are best suited to children aged 8+. Younger children may be able to take part as part of a private session, where the pace and content can be adapted more closely to your family.

Can younger children join?

Children under 8 are usually only suitable for private bookings. This allows us to adjust the activities, timings and expectations so the session remains safe, enjoyable and age appropriate.

What will we actually do during the session?

Activities may include fire lighting, shelter building, water skills, natural crafts, identification, tool use, woodland games and seasonal nature activities. The exact mix depends on the weather, season, group and instructor judgement.

Is bushcraft safe for children?

Yes. Activities are carefully managed by an experienced instructor, with clear safety guidance throughout. More advanced elements, such as tool use or fire lighting, are only included when suitable for the group and conditions.

What should we wear?

Please wear outdoor clothing that can get muddy or smoky, sturdy closed-toe footwear and weather-appropriate layers. Waterproofs are recommended if rain is forecast.

Do we need any experience?

No. Sessions are beginner-friendly and guided throughout. They are designed for families who want to learn together.

What happens in bad weather?

Sessions run in most normal weather conditions and are adapted to suit the day. Heavy rain, wind or cold may change the activity focus, but that is part of real bushcraft. If conditions are unsafe, we will advise on the best option.

Are private bookings available?

Yes. Private sessions are available for up to 6 people and are recommended for younger children, special occasions, birthdays or families wanting a more personal experience.
