A senior role for a qualified outdoor professional

As Senior Instructor, you’ll take ownership of day-to-day standards across delivery, staff performance, and operational readiness. This is a hands-on leadership role — you will still deliver sessions, but your priority is ensuring the whole team delivers safely, confidently, and consistently.

You’ll lead from the front: supporting instructors, managing quality control, keeping sites and equipment in shape, and act as the Duty Manager day to day.

Train, observe, coach and support instructors through ongoing feedback.

Run regular senior team check-ins to solve problems and improve performance.

Support recruitment, onboarding and seasonal team readiness.

Maintain a rolling 90-day development plan for team and operational priorities.

2) Session Planning & Risk Management

Keep session plans, operating procedures and risk assessments current and in-use.

Ensure safe systems of work are followed across activities and sites.

Carry out routine safety checks and address issues early.

Support inspections from governing bodies and affiliates.

Help develop, test and refine new activities and programme delivery.

3) Site & Equipment Standards

Ensure sites and equipment are safe, functional and presentation-ready.

Maintain clear systems for equipment checks, faults, repairs and replacement.

Track out-of-service equipment and make sure it’s dealt with promptly.

Maintain and deliver an annual site work plan.

Work with the Operations Manager on purchasing, allocation and priorities.

4) Duty Manager & Daily Operations

Lead morning team meetings and deploy staff effectively each day.

Act as Duty Manager when required, overseeing smooth daily operations.

Be the primary point of contact when covering for the Operations Manager.

Improve efficiency through sensible resourcing and practical systems.

Work within the activities budget set by the Operations Manager.

Activity delivery & professional experience

You will remain actively involved in delivery, leading by example and maintaining high standards across all activities.

Our programme includes canoeing, kayaking, archery, bushcraft, high and low ropes, residentials, events and school programmes. You’ll oversee quality, mentor staff, and step in where experience and judgement are needed.

We are looking for a highly experienced outdoor professional who has already worked in a leadership or senior instructor role. You’ll be confident managing risk, supporting staff performance, and making sound operational decisions.

You should be well-qualified, comfortable taking responsibility, and motivated by improving systems, developing people, and delivering excellent outdoor experiences.
